What is breast implant revision surgery?
The goal of breast implant revision surgery is to replace old breast implants with new implants. Often the goal is also to change or improve the appearance of the breasts while updating the implant material, which could include:
- A concurrent breast lift or reduction
- Reshaping the breast implant pocket to reposition the implant on the chest
- Either increasing or decreasing the size, shape or style of the breast implant
The desire to have breast implant revision surgery can be because of any of the following reasons:
- Desire to change the size of the breasts
- Pain from capsular contracture
- Concern about rupture or migration of implant
- Change from saline to silicone or different style of implant
Over time, breast implants can change shape or size, and the overlying breast tissue can also change, creating an appearance or feel to the breast that is less desirable than the original result. Also, many breast implants have a lifetime warranty on the actual implant device, but after ten years the costs associated with having surgery to replace the implants are no longer covered. Because of this, many women will elect to replace or update their breast implants at or around the 10-year time frame.
Breast implant revision surgery is not a standard or routine procedure and needs to be tailored specifically to the patient’s goals and desires. Therefore, this surgery should be performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon who is well-trained and experienced in all types of breast surgery and who will listen to the patient’s goals and desires and will develop a surgical plan specifically to address all of the issues at the time of surgery.

What does a breast revision surgery involve?
Breast implant surgery involves surgically removing your implants and any excess scar tissue if needed, and placing new implants or restoring your breasts to their natural size and shape without implants.
It is performed under general an aesthetic and typically takes one to two hours.
The exact procedure your surgeon will use for breast revision surgery will depend on the reason for your revision. Your surgeon will discuss the procedure with you in detail beforehand.
Often your surgeon will use the same incisions that were used to insert your original implants. A breast lift may be done at the same time, and this will require incisions to be made on the line of your areola vertically underneath it.
Your surgeon will take out your old implant. They may remove part or all of the capsule scar tissue. If you are changing breast implant size, they will enlarge or reduce the pocket for your breast implant to fit. This will insert the new implant if required.
The wounds are closed with dissolvable stitches.

Breast revision surgery can take 1-4 hours and is performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. The specific technique used during your breast revision surgery will depend upon your goals. However, we always use the latest techniques for every procedure.
Breast Implant Revision Recovery
In general, recovery from breast revision surgery will be similar to your original breast augmentation healing process. For the first 2-3 days, you can control any discomfort with oral pain medication.
During this time, rest will be of the highest importance. Also, you will need to keep your arm extension to a minimum to help prevent the muscle and tissue from stretching or separating. Bruising and swelling are common but should subside within a few weeks.
Most patients return to work after 1-2 weeks. Still, you will need to avoid reaching or lifting for an additional 3-4 weeks.
Any scars will be pink for several weeks but will eventually fade. After the swelling period ends, your breasts will begin to feel softer and more natural
Following your revision surgery, a thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluids. We apply gauze or bandages to your incisions. An elastic bandage or support bra will help minimize swelling and support the newly revised breasts.
After your procedure, you usually can return home that same day.
